Rewind
back to the 60s, no matter how absurd and outlandish the style, we all had that
“MUST HAVE” garment. Fast forward to 2015 when reminiscing about the good old
times, emphasis on old, we sometimes shake our head in disbelief and say “what
was I thinking / wearing!? The 60s were
all about “excess” and “brands”. You HAD to flaunt it; otherwise you were just
the odd one out. Every trend, every look and every piece of clothing had to be
grand. This rule applied to both men and women. Here’s a look at the top mens
styles of the 60s that can be easily modernized and wearable today.
1.
Colorful Pants
First
thought that comes to mind when viewing photos of pants from the 60s “headache”
is what comes to my mind. The 60s were all about bright, bold, colorful
patterns. The bolder the better! Today designers are incorporating these vivid
bright hues into everyday wearable chinos. In my opinion bright colors look
great on pants, just make sure your pants don’t fit like they are from the 60s.
Clothing stores like French Connection offer an array of boldly colored slim
fitting trousers that will definitely catch people’s attention, in a good way!
2. Classic
Blue Denim
White tees
and ripped-up blue jeans. Mimicking that Bruce Springsteen “Born in the USA”
look, the 60s were all about denim on denim. A great rule to pairing denim on
denim is to make sure that the washes contrast from one another. Have a great
light washed denim jacket or vest, pair it with some dark washed jeans. Levis,
the king of denim has some great go to pieces that you can easily incorporate
into your denim look.
3. The
Yuppie Look
The word
YUP stood for Young Urban Professionals. This look was characterized by a
classic polo shirt with the collar facing upwards, worn with jeans and a
sweatshirt that hung from their backs. If you want to put some prep in your
step, an easy way to make this timeless style look like it belongs in 2015, DO
NOT leave your collar facing upwards! Ralph Lauren, the master of upscale prep
has designed some great summertime looks for those of us who want to keep our
dressed-up cool.
4. Ray
Bans
Whoever
called fashion trends of the 60s absurd and shady weren’t thinking of Ray-Bans!
Help made popular by actor Tom Cruise, in movies like Top Gun and Risky
Business, Ray-Bans are still popular today. Keeping with its classic wayfarer
and aviator style, Ray-Bans have now introduced two more distinct styles,
Clubmaster, and Jackie Ohh. If you are looking for a timeless piece to look
cool in the summer heat, Ray-Bans are your go to shade.
5. Raver
Pants
Some style
trends are best left in the 60s. R.I.P. Raver pants, which were also known as
“phat pants” a favorite among high school kids in the 60s. They signified the
“cool dude” look. Raver pants had the most hideous color combinations that ran
along the length of your leg, completely covering your shoes, tapering widely
at the bottom. Sometimes we just need to pull the cord and put a trend out of
it’s misery. R.I.P. – RAVER PANTS 60s.
6. The Polka Dotted Shirt
The polka dotted shirt is another fashion
trend which crossed over from 1930s into the 50s (see the famous British pop
star Davy Jones, the frontman of the boys band The Monkees donning the black
polka dot short).
Polka dotted shirts were popular in blue,
brown and black, but there was something in the water back then that made all
the men go for the red polka dotted shirts.
The red polka dotted shirt possessed a kind
of charm that made men fall for it. It probably had something to do with red,
the color of passion for every man in the street, at workplaces, at places of
social entertainment was wearing these. If you sit down to watch a couple of
movies or television shows from the 60s,
the red polka dotted shirt is not going to miss your sight.
Polka dots have vanished from the men’s
fashion scene; however, they are still doing well among women.
7.
Striped Trousers
Men today prefer their trousers to be plain
colored without an inch of print on it. That wasn’t the case in the 60s. Trousers with horizontal and vertical stripes on
them were quite popular in the 60s. The trousers were either
striped both horizontally and vertically or simply vertically. Either way, this
trend was quite famous among men back then.
Striped trousers were usually light pastel
colors with darker shades of stripes on them. They were either bell bottomed or
had straight cut.
Fads come and go. With the 60s behind us we
are now looking into the future of modernization. Weather knowing it or not, we
still incorporate past decades into our wardrobe. The best way to take
something from the 60s and bring it into 2015, is by changing the fit and
styling of your garments. Laterz
