We’ve extolled the benefits of being on first name terms with a tailor countless times. Finding, and getting friendly with, a good tailor will revolutionise the way your clothes fit you. They can even aid you in some of your more experimental DIY and upcycling efforts.

Get a head start on your sartorial spring cleaning. In truth, when it comes to dressing well, guys don’t need a lot of choices; they need the right choices. As long as you stick to fuss-free, classic and versatile pieces (think navy blazers, grey wool trousers, dark denim jeans, Oxford cloth shirts, neutral and well-cut t-shirts) then it’s hard to go wrong.

Throw out anything that you either haven’t worn in the last twelve months or have no intention of wearing again. Then, write a list of the ten items you want to purchase during the coming year and make a plan of where you’re going to find them.

Fashion is cyclical, self-contradictory and, as plenty of people have been arguing in recent years, moving at a pace that’s potentially damaging.

Trying to keep up with it is likely to leave you tired and bankrupt. Stick with what you know works for you and then pick and choose whatever suits you from this season’s trends. It’s a damn sight easier to incorporate something that’s in sync with your personal style as it stands, rather than worlds apart.

For instance, are you a sharp and refined dresser? Why not introduce something as subtle as a tie or pocket square in an on-trend floral or polka dot print to your collection this year?

Amp Up Your Accessories

A touch petrified by the prospect of the above? No sweat – if you want to start slow, coloured footwear or accessories offer sure-fire ways to brighten up your winter looks. This season, trainers – the footwear du jour – provide a convenient injection of colour. To keep your look sharp, be sure to pair yours with ankle-length tapered trousers or rolled-up denim.

You could also try introducing colour to your outfit via traditional cold-weather accessories such as scarves, gloves or hats, or if you’re after something more contemporary, an on-trend backpack or fluoro bright watch.

We know your office attire probably can’t be given the full Men’s Fashion colour treatment, but that doesn’t mean your commute has to be dull. Why not try a punchy coloured puffer jacket as a bold alternative to the traditional overcoat?

An unapologetic piece in its own right, the puffer calls for colour – at least if the autumn/winter 2014 runways are your reference point. Burgeoning London-based talent Astrid Andersen showed an icy blue button-up puffer at London Collections: Men’s Fashion Style , while in Milan, at Calvin Klein Collection, Italo Zucchelli opted for a cropped puffer in high shine rose gold – a brilliant way of breaking up the sharp minimalism he’s become famous for.
