Few decades encompassed as much change as the 1960s, and that's reflected in the era's music, furniture, and fashion. For men, styles and fashions went from conservative suits and hats to a riot of color and pattern by the end of the decade. Sixties style resurgences happen regularly, and many vintage looks still resonate. Current designers return to the well of creativity that created mod style, Nehru jackets, and flared pants.

When buying authentic 1960s clothing or vintage-inspired reproductions, it's helpful to think of the decade in two eras: the suits and skinny ties of the early '60s and the hippie-influenced casual trends of the latter half of the decade. Both eras have their appeal, but they're vastly different.

Early 1960s Menswear Styles and Trends

In the early part of the decade, the post-war prosperity that influenced the style evolutions of the 1950s continued almost unbroken into the '60s. European trends began to appear in men's fashion, particularly in the narrower styling of suits and slacks. Prints appeared in a smaller, more subdued form in ties and casual shirts with stripes and checks.

Men dressed more formally for most occasions; even a small dinner party at home meant wearing a tie. During the earliest years of the decade, hats were required wearing for men, but President John F. Kennedy's habit of not wearing hats encouraged other men to adopt the same hatless style. Suits were not only for the office. For vintage shoppers, that's good news; because so many men had closets full of coats and blazers, these period items are still widely available.

Suits

While suits were expected office attire for men throughout the 1960s, the suits in the earlier half of the decade were more formal in style, fabric, and color. The conservative color palette for jackets and slacks tended toward blues and grays with dark greens, browns, and tans as other possibilities. White dress shirts were standard wear with suits. Although light blue and yellow shirts were also available, the era's defining style is a white shirt with a darker jacket and tie. When dressing to achieve an era-appropriate style, a white shirt always works.

The early 1960s silhouette in suits was long and lean. Slacks reached the natural waistline or slightly above it to extend the length of the legs. Although pleated fronts were available in larger sizes, the majority of dressy slacks for men were flat-fronted and slightly tapered to the ankle. Hems fell just below the top of the shoes. Cuffs were popular, but not required. Because slacks were designed to be closely fitted and narrow, sizes may run small for a modern wearer, so pay close attention to measurements rather than the sizes printed on the tag when buying vintage men's slacks.

Sport Coats

Jackets and sport coats featured narrow, notched lapels in the early 1960s. Like slacks, they were designed to create a tall, narrow silhouette with moderate shoulder padding and simple, clean lines. To compensate for their narrow shape at the hem, most jackets had a double vent. Pinstripes and subtle tone-on-tone windowpane checks became more common as the decade progressed. Matching vests were still appropriate, but they were typically for older men; younger men had begun to embrace the two-piece suit. By 1965, bolder checks and plaids began to appear in men's suits and blazers. To create the early 1960s look, a dark blue or charcoal three-button jacket with narrow lapels is a good place to start.

Accessories

Ties were standard office wear, but in the early part of the decade, they were subdued. Narrow ties in solid hues or narrow diagonal stripes were the rule, and even today, a narrow tie in a conservative print is shorthand for an early '60s look. Fedoras with moderate brims were essential elements of a well-dressed man's attire for the decade's earliest years, so when aiming for an early 1960s style, add a hat that matches or complements the jacket.

Early 1960s Casual Wear for Men

A prosperous era meant more leisure time, and an increase in backyard barbecue parties and picnics brought men's casual wear into sharper focus. The same silhouette that predominated for men's formal clothing also informed casual dressing. Casual slacks were designed to lengthen the leg, and casual shirts had crisp collars with small lapels. Knit pullover shirts and polo styles became popular in the early '60s. These styles remain easy to find today, and a simple pair of casual slacks with a pullover shirt can easily become a vintage look with attention to detail in fabric choices and colors.

Although color and pattern hadn't yet made its way into the office during the early 1960s, it was becoming common in casual clothes. Plaids, often in vibrant hues, decorated both button-down casual shirts and shorts, although rarely at the same time. Shorts generally reached slightly above the knee and had plain, straight legs. Like slacks, they were worn at the waist. This higher-waisted silhouette is key to pulling off an authentic early 1960s look.
