We are used to expect each new season to bring forward fresh takes on high outerwear for men, with styles that span from smart reinterpretations of classics, to ones that really demand attention. Not so much a trend, as a statement piece of outerwear best describes a timeless attitude, there’s still a lot to discuss when it comes to a man’s choice in the outerwear department, more so for those spring and summer days defined by unpredictable weather.

Breathable, lightweight and easy to wear, yes, the men’s high fashion outerwear for 2015 is also imagined to make a statement, be it subtle or bold, smart or rather risky. Read on after the break to find out which are the statements to be made this spring and how to wear this season’s key styles.

A statement in length.
There’s always such a thing as a safe ground when it comes to a coat or jacket’s length, but that won’t help you make any statements. This spring, the runways were divided in between the two extremes: the cool cropped silhouette in its various interpretations, and the longer length, which slowly regained prominence.
Cropped length.
The cropped length is somewhat loose and casual, which is exactly why it must always be balanced by the finest tailoring in order to come across looking smart, while also retaining a certain masculine edge. This season wear it in soft, pastel-tone combinations, balancing out the structured silhouette of a cropped jacket with a pair of pants featuring a relaxed fit layered on top of loose shirts in bright tones, and teamed to a pair of pants stopping just above the ankle with a classic button-down and a pair of high-waisted trousers, styled with a tie and a pair of boat shoes worn sockless.

There’s a certain elegance that veils a long coat, which makes this outerwear piece able to perfectly complement a sober, sophisticated look and to also elevate an outfit that leans toward casualness. Wear the long coat layered on top of a classic shirt + sweater combo, a pair of fitted trousers and dress shoes, keeping the colour palette clean and the overall outfit uncomplicated to dress up a pair of relaxed trousers and a loose t-shirt, adding more style points through a warm colour palette made out of beige tones, a pair of reflective sunglasses and a roomy backpack in the guise of a classic trench, belted at the waist and styled with basic shirts, skinny pants and little to no accessories.

A statement in print.
You can always trust a good print to help you stand out in the crowd, and the rule best applies to your basic pieces of outerwear this spring. Keep an eye out for

Colourful stripes.
They elongate your silhouette and they also make for a bold statement when dressed up in vivid colours like cobalt blue, red or emerald green. Style the colourful stripes adorning your outerwear over classic, two-piece summer suits in basic hues, to contrast and tone down the playful effect of the stripes layered on top of a long-sleeved shirt and a pair of fitted trousers, colour-coordinating the outfit for double the impact teamed to a pair of matching trousers, and styled with a plain shirt and a bow tie for more of a dapper feel.

Floral prints.
For those men who are brave enough to sport bold floral prints as the ultimate statement, there are plenty of options waiting in the outerwear department. The floral prints look best on lightweight silhouettes hitting a couple of inches above, or below the knee in laid-back, casual combination mixing loose-fit trousers with printed sweaters, and button-down shirts whenever opting for such a bold combination of prints, make sure the patterns make sense together and the colours look harmonious when clashed.

Camo prints.
The camouflage print can already be considered a perennial statement to be made by men during both the warm, and the colder months. What makes it fresh and modern each season is the crisp combination of colours and the newly imagined patterns that go from abstract, down to pure militaristic interpretations. Sport the camo print as a bold accent on an utilitarian-inspired jacket, that you can style with a pair of chinos, a basic white t-shirt and a pair of sneakers in the guise of textural waves undulating over a car coat, styled with a pair of elegant pants and a light shirt;

Geometric patterns.
The geometric patterns are usually the easiest ones to sport, due to their abstract nature that makes them both fresh-looking and modern above all. This season you can’t go wrong with cropped bomber and biker jackets featuring bold geometric prints in black & white geometric patterned jackets worn over both plain shirts and printed t-shirts (seeking interesting pattern combinations and bold clashes of prints) geometric patterned jackets styled either with a pair of tailored trousers, or a pair of tailored shorts;

A Mens High Fashion in colour.
Come spring and summer, you will find a deluge of bright citrus tones and others just as bold, ready to help you reinvent any classic piece of outerwear. The lime green, the orange and the vibrant red look best on tailored coats featuring a slightly oversized silhouette when they are toned down with darker shades, kept light with other bright hues, or hitting the middle ground with different shades of gray defining the rest of your outfit.

Contrast colour lining.
There’s also such a thing as a subtle statement to be made if the concept behind it is smart and innovative enough to push through. The contrast colour lining appears to be based on this same principle, having classic pieces of outerwear made to look modern with just a simple twist. Seek your coat in traditional warm-weather hues, ranging from pure whites, to yellow, mustard and burnt orange classic silhouettes worn almost always unbuttoned, with a colour pop lining peeking-out from underneath wear them with straight pants, a neat raised crease running down the front, and basic shirts.

Tailored denim.
The 2015 marked a return to all things denim, but the kind to make a statement this season is tailored, slightly washed-out and cut into boxy silhouettes. Trust a dark denim coat to look just as good:
    with a pair of loose pants, skinny trousers or a tailored pair of jeans;
    with a smart shirt, a boxy sweatshirt or a printed t-shirt;
    with heavily soled shoes and sneakers alike, styled with ample bags.

Belted coats.
Last but not least, regardless of the silhouette, the choice of print, or the fabric, a coat can be turned into a statement by the man wearing it with something as simple as the belting of the waist (or any section above it apparently). Loosely belted at the waist to offer a good glimpse at the garments underneath, casually fixed below the shoulder, or fully fastened for an ultra-sleek look, anything goes in turning your classic piece of outerwear.
