With help from the right people, being a stylish man is easy. Dressing well often has more to do with the right color and fit of a garment than the designer label underneath. Pay attention to your budget and choose pieces that either fit well now or can be slightly altered to look like you walked off the runway.
Hire a tailor.
Wear a suit that fits. Every man should have at least one suit in the closet. Even if you don't wear a suit to the office the suit can be worn to weddings, job interviews or special-occasion dinners. Some men can get away with buying a suit from a clothing store and have it fit perfectly right away. However, unless your body happens to be the exact proportions of the fit model whose measurements were used to design the piece, you'll need to get your suit tailored. Ask friends or coworkers (the ones who dress well) for recommendations. The tailor will take all your measurements and trim, hem and sew your suit until it fits just right
Choose the right denim wash.
Wear the right wash of denim. If you're allowed to wear jeans to work consider opting only for dark washes. Dark denim with a simple tucked-in collared shirt is appropriate for casual Fridays at most companies. Dark denim is still casual and can transfer to after-work hours but because it isn't faded and isn't overly casual. It still has a crisp look that's appropriate for most offices. Stick with light-color denim or faded denim for weekend wear. It pairs well with a T-shirt for watching the big game on television with friends.
Get Inspired
Don’t just listen to whatever your favorite magazine or website is telling you to do this season. Instead, have a look for yourself. Check out what other people are wearing – if you like it, figure out why, and decide whether it would work for your own personal style. If not, is there a way you could incorporate elements of it?
Look far and wide. Why not, as several designers do each season, take inspiration from women’s fashion? Check out our previous article on the subject here.
It’s not just the people around you that can be used as sources of inspiration. Nature and your immediate environment can help influence the textures, colors and patterns you choose to utilize on a daily basis – whether you opt for floral in spring, bright sunshine yellows in high summer or mirror the hues of the fallen leaves in autumn.

A personal shopper can help you look your best.
Build a relationship with a personal shopper, boutique manager or a salesperson. Most department stores including Nordstrom and Neiman Marcus offer free personal shopping. If you need help picking out which clothes look best on you try using this service. Let the shopper know your exact budget and show the person what items in the store you gravitate toward. The shopper can either pick out items for you right then or call you when he has items come in that might work for you. Many men's clothing boutiques also offer this same service. Keep in mind that some salespeople work on commission and may push you to buy the more expensive pieces of clothing. Communicate your budget and how many pieces you would like to buy.
Choose a watch that fits your lifestyle.
Buy a watch. The watch is a key accessory for men's fashion. Women can wear endless amounts of jewelry, while men can show their style through the type of watch they wear. When buying a watch think about your lifestyle, how many watches you own and what type of setting you will be wearing the watch in. Keep in mind whether the watch is water-resistant and has mechanical movement. According to Esquire magazine, watches with mechanical movement tend to last longer because they have a higher level of craftsmanship. According to Alexander Vileshin, in GQ Magazine, take a luxury watch to a repair company to be cleaned and re-oiled every few years. This will keep the watch in top shape.
Don’t Be A Slave To Trends
Fashion is cyclical, self-contradictory and, as plenty of people have been arguing in recent years, moving at a pace that’s potentially damaging.
Trying to keep up with it is likely to leave you tired and bankrupt. Stick with what you know works for you and then pick and choose whatever suits you from this season’s trends. It’s a damn sight easier to incorporate something that’s in sync with your personal style as it stands, rather than worlds apart.
For instance, are you a sharp and refined dresser? Why not introduce something as subtle as a tie or pocket square in an on-trend floral or polka dot print to your collection this year?
